The aging process has an effect on every part of our face – from skin right down to the bone.
At the skin level, damage caused by sun exposure is the most common concern. Living in sunny Perth, it is inevitable that these changes become more pronounced with age. The most obvious signs of sun damage include pigmentation, visible redness and vessels as well as textural changes in the skin. Sun exposure can break down collagen and elastin in the skin which can lead to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, or an overall ‘crepey’ appearance of the skin.
Sadly, it doesn’t stop there. With the normal aging process, the once plump compartments of fat in our face (called fat pads) regress and descend down, which leads to under-eye hollowness (tear trough deformity), deepening of smile lines (nasolabial folds), sagging and the appearance of jowls. A youthful face appears as an inverted triangle with more fullness in the cheeks and pointier chin.
With the aging process, as the fat pads shrink and descend down and as we lose the facial bony scaffolding, our face begins to look more ‘bottom heavy’ or more squared and our once plump cheeks appear flatter. The ideal inverted triangular face begins to appear more like an upright triangle.
However, when you stop and think about it – aging should really be celebrated! Aging ‘gracefully’ and confidently is possible by the careful use of select and customised anti-aging treatments.
